Our Medicare Supplement team is looking for dynamic underwriting leader who is passionate about developing programs and teams. This opportunity is a highly visible position within the Medicare Supplement business. The position will afford the candidate the opportunity to build upon our current Underwriting strategy and work across the various departments to understand the impact to the organization. The underwriting management position allows for career growth within the business and the AETNA/CVS health organization. S/He will manage an underwriting staff performing new business underwriting functions in support of our underwriting strategy and key performance metrics. The Underwriting Manager has responsibility for the growth and development of our current underwriting staff.

Fundamental Components:

  • Leads team to achieve department specific goals through articulation and application of business strategy, initiatives, and underwriting policies.

  • Manages workflow within unit and directs changing priorities.

  • Ensures that timely actions and deliverables are met, and team members have the information to do their jobs.

  • Escalates underwriting exceptions and financial variances to senior management balancing membership revenue growth and profitability targets.

  • Engages in underwriting decisions with significant benefit implications.

  • Articulates company services, product standards,underwriting policies and new initiatives to sales, customers, brokers &consultants.

  • Leads process improvement initiatives to improve productivity, accuracy, and/or customer service and influences tool development. Takes accountability for driving solutions to completion.

  • Responsible for manager activities related to staffing,talent management, training and development. Coaches others to maximize performance and is responsible for performance development and review.

  • Takes accountability for the team to ensures customer specific documents, deliverables and account related information produced by the team are accurate and support the customers quote/renewal strategy. Also ensures accurate reporting of financials is maintained for the team

  • Oversees training of underwriting staff and internal customers and external constituents. Provides opportunities to develop skills and experiences.

  • Understands business workflows of various departments including, but not limited to, sales, licensing and Call Center service reps.

  • Makes sound underwriting decisions based on gathered data,established criteria, medical judgment and guidelines to assess risk.


  • 7+ years underwriting experience with extensive insurance industry knowledge. Solid knowledge of other benefit program(s) (Medical, Dental, Vision, Pharmacy, Stop Loss, Medicare, Voluntary etc.) and pricing of related benefits.

  • Demonstrates leadership that fosters and supports a strong team of individual contributors.

  • Experience in anticipating customer needs and requirements as well as facilitating and negotiating using tact and diplomacy.

  • Experience in building strong cross-functional relationships with internal and external constituents.

  • Demonstrates success in communicating effectively with internal and external constituents.

  • Strong analytical, math aptitude, and organization skills, with superior critical thinking and decision-making skills.

  • Proven ability to communicate using tact and diplomacy, underwriting requirements, rates and decisions.

  • Demonstrates a strong ability to anticipate customer needs and requirements.


    The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
