Aetnas Consumer Health Services Clinical Analytics Team creates innovative analytic tools to drive better decision making within the organization. We are currently seeking a Lead Data Scientist to join us in developing analytic tools and products to improve health outcomes. This position will lead initiatives to develop predictive analytics and apply analytically derived insights to improve consumer engagement, enhance health outcomes and lower health care costs.

Fundamental Components:

The position will work with stakeholders across the organization to execute complex analytical projects. This role requires partnering with customers to solve important health care challenges using advanced statistical methods on an industry leading scalable technology platform. The Lead Data Scientist will work in a highly collaborative environment, often coordinating the work of other analysts, to develop analytical solutions that leverage data from diverse sources and deploying those solutions with agility and flexibility.

Manages large and complex analytical projects from data exploration, to model building, performance evaluation and testing

Uses strong knowledge of statistical algorithms and predictive models to investigate problems, detect patterns and recommend solutions

Provides project guidance, technical advice, and mentorship to junior team members

Uses strong programming skills to extract, explore and interpret large volumes of data in various forms

Collaborates with business partners to understand their problems and goals, develop models, statistical analysis, data reports and performance metrics.


  • 7+years of progressively complex related experience with health care data analysis, linear regression.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis methods, machine learning, and predictive modeling, with advanced specialization in some areas.

  • Solid understanding of health care industry, products, and systems

    *Deep knowledge of advanced analytics tools and languages to analyze large data sets from multiple data sources; including SQL, SAS, Python, R, HIVE and Hadoop.

    *Strong skills to effectively communicate and negotiate across the business and in the external health care environment.

  • Demonstrates strong ability to communicate technical concepts and implications to business partners.

  • Able to present project and insights to Sr. Management and in front of a large audience. Partnering with Stakeholders to understand needs and help drive direction. Proactively identifying opportunities.

  • Excellent business acumen.

  • Independently manage complex projects.

  • Able to coach and mentor team members.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills


    The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a Master's degree areas of focus Statistics with social science, health care or physical science.


  • Familiarity with healthcare data (payer claims, clinical data from EMR, etc.)

  • Analytical approach to problems: start with the business need, develop solution, share with stakeholders, implement at scale.

  • Focus on impact: what type of change is the analysis/model driving?


  • This is an office based position.

  • The locations can be either Hartford, CT, Wellesley, MA or New York City, NY.
